60 Seconds to FIRE Newsletter 24

Hey Readers,

This edition of the Newsletter causes me to reflect on things that have changed in the 2 years since I started this whole thing. I moved to a new continent, I ran a marathon, started a relationship, walked another camino and read a cubic shit ton of books. It’s been a jam packed 24 editions and I want to thank you all for the likes, comments and support along the way. It helps to remind me that some of you actually read it hahah. Keep it coming and I look forward to the next 24.

Central Spain is beautiful for hiking. Bugger all people and a lot of empty villages.. but the food is 🤤

I love books that take an axe to the idea that success is all about “manifesting and hoping for the best, or it is what it is.” Yuck, complete delusion.

Outliers politely dismantles these old myths and replaces them with something far more useful: success is mostly about environmenttiming, and leveraged effort.
Basically, it’s Gladwell saying, “You’re not unlucky — you’re just playing on the wrong field.”

Such a classic for those you want to live differently.

Here are my Top 4 Takeaways 👇
(To be honest I could have listed more…)

1. The 10,000-Hour Rule (Relax… You Don’t Actually Need 10,000 Hours)

Gladwell shows that mastery takes time, not magic. World-class performers didn’t stumble into greatness—they put in focused reps, usually in an environment that accelerated their progress.

🔥 FIRE Lesson:
Early retirement isn’t about grinding 10,000 hours—it’s about stacking a few hundred hours of high-impact knowledge:

  • geo-arbitrage
  • passive income systems
  • tax efficiency
  • basic investing discipline
  • maybe a cheeky bit of options selling 😉

Small smart steps > decades of hard labour.

“I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.” – Coleman Cox

2. Environment Eats Talent for Breakfast

Where you grow up (and where you choose to live) shapes your habits, beliefs, and opportunities. Change the environment → change the trajectory.

🔥 FIRE Lesson:
Trying to retire early while living in Sydney, London, Auckland, Toronto, or San Francisco is like trying to diet inside a bakery with all those Portuguese custard tarts (oh my god, so good).
Move somewhere with lower costs, slower pace, and better quality of life… and suddenly early retirement stops being this Herculean task and starts being a spreadsheet exercise.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn

3. Luck Isn’t Random — It’s Created by Positioning

Success stories weren’t “lucky.” They were ready when opportunity arrived — often because they’d intentionally placed themselves somewhere opportunity could find them.

🔥 FIRE Lesson:
You can manufacture your own luck by:

  • reducing living expenses
  • freeing up time
  • removing financial pressure
  • giving yourself the space to take shots

Geo-arbitrage is the ultimate luck amplifier.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

The rewards of getting up early before a 6 hour walk.

4. Cultural Legacies Shape Your Financial Future

Gladwell dives into how cultural habits—passed down subconsciously—affect behaviour. Some cultures overwork. Some underspend. Some avoid risk like it’s radioactive. Some take massive leaps.

🔥 FIRE Lesson:
Your default financial behaviour probably isn’t yours — it’s inherited.
If you grew up in a “work until 67 and hope for the best” culture, you’ll unconsciously drift toward that path unless you actively break the pattern.
Moving abroad is one of the easiest ways to reset your defaults:
New culture → new habits → new life trajectory.

“People do not decide their futures; they decide their habits, and their habits decide their futures.” – F.M. Alexander (New favourite quote!)

Another reason to surround yourselves with like minded people to help and challenge your inherited beliefs.

Final Thoughts

Outliers reminds us that success isn’t about superpowers. It’s about structure, timing, environment, and choosing a field you can actually win on.

You don’t need to be born into money.
You don’t need to be a genius.
You don’t need 10,000 hours of pain.

You need:
📍 Smart positioning
💪 Consistency
🌍 An environment that multiplies your effort
✈️ (Possibly a plane ticket to a cheaper country)

Outliers is really a secret manual for early retirement: change the game board, and the game changes.

Real outliers don’t wait for freedom — they design for it.

Highly Recommended!
